Tobacco Fields and Father’s Day
As a foreigner, whenever I mention that I have visited this small town, bordering with Poland and at the river Oder. No one understands me. I have to actually show in the map where exactly this city is located.
The ride from Berlin is straightforward enough since there’s a direct RE train and it only takes like one hour to reach Schwedt.
Every station gets you closer to Poland 🙂
We visited Schwedt on a Father’s day, that is on a 14th May.
Once you arrive the city feels quite unhabited, is it possible that on a holiday like this?, everyone chooses to go somewhere else?
First impressions of the city are the decorations on the fasades of the buildings, they’ve painted cats, birds, and nature. I wonder how this looks like in winter.
Father’s day in Germany is celebrated by men gathering together, some of them on bikes. They drink beer and go around, or hike, then they keep drinking beer, male bonding and that’s it. Socialize in manly way. Bro-bonding.
History facts of Schwedt:
The history of Schwedt is interesting. They were producing tobacco and comercializing it within the Prussian Empire. Then the first and second war came. They continued producing tobacco but then west side took over more tropical areas and they were better at this industry. Leaving Schwedt behind. The type of tobacco here was a bit spicy.
Nothing from the tobacco industry remains here but the open fields of grass, lacking trees, most likely they were tobacco plantations until the last RDA company closed.
There are two churches in the city center. The first one is catholic and is around 130 years old (St. Mariä Himmelfahrt) and the second one is protestant (St. Katharinen) and it is around 700 years old. This information is available in front of them. Old stuff.
